This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for September 20.
Six COMMON MERGANSERS were along the West Fork of the San Gabriel River near Highway 39 north of Azusa on September 18.
A COMMON GROUND-DOVE was reported at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh near Playa del Rey on September 16.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at a residence on the Palos Verdes Peninsula on September 13.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek was present through September 17 near the UCLA boat ramp (upstream from Pacific Ave.).
Two RED KNOTS were on the jetties at the Ballona Creek mouth from September 11-14, with one still reported there on September 15.
An ARCTIC TERN was at Malibu Lagoon on September 17.
A COMMON TERN was at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on September 14.
A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued in the settling ponds below Hansen Dam through September 14.
At Madrona Marsh in Torrance, the immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen through September 19.
Two CATTLE EGRETS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) and two more were near Ave F and 90th Street East in the Antelope Valley on September 18.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were along Ballona Creek north of Pacific on September 15. Presumably these are the same birds that move around the area and are frequently found at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh.
A BANK SWALLOW was along the LA River in Long Beach between the Metro Line RR crossing and Del Amo on September 14 and a PURPLE MARTIN was in the same area on September 17.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach on September 15 in the fennel field.
A BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was on San Clemente Island on September 14.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on September 19. It was in willows east of the meadow area.
A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was at Apollo Park near Lancaster on September 15. It was first seen in the tamarisks west of the west fence line, and later by the northwest corner of the lake. An immature SABINE’S GULL and a COMMON TERN were observed at the park on September 20.
An immature male AMERICAN REDSTART was at Rosedale Angelus Cemetery near downtown Los Angeles on September 13.
A BLACK POLL WARBLER continued in Exposition Park in Los Angeles through September 16 in Ficus trees near the southwest corner of the Rose Garden. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in the Rose Garden on September 19.
Another BLACKPOLL WARBLER was along the LA River in Glendale. It was in the small park on the east side of the river just below Los Feliz Blvd.
