Education Programs
Engaging youth and families in local nature awareness,
scientific study, and environmental practices, right in our own communities.
Los Angeles Audubon Society has developed a robust education program spans elementary through community college level students, focusing on underserved urban-core youth.
These programs have grown, thrived, and now have spun off into a standalone nonprofit, Nature Nexus Institute, that is organized and focused specifically on a principle of reciprocity between communities and nature that is essential to the survival of both, and which seeks to provide equitable and inter-generational entry points to cultivating healthy community-nature relationships. Programs managed by Nature Nexus Institute are:
Baldwin Hills Greenhouse Program
Watershed Field Trip Programs
Science Illustration In-Class and After-School Workshops
Schoolyard Habitat Programs
West Los Angeles College Conservation Studies Certificate Program
Summer Fellows Program
Los Angeles Audubon Society provides family education opportunities through its bird walks, and LA Audubon Society volunteers partner with Nature Nexus Institute to run the Ballona Wetlands Field Trips and Ballona Open Wetlands.
Baldwin Hills Greenhouse Program
The Baldwin Hills Greenhouse Program is a competitive after-school and weekend
program for local high school students that incorporates environmental science and research, community leadership, hands-on habitat restoration, and art to address local environmental issues. It's managed and funded by Los Angeles Audubon, with additional funding from Baldwin Hills Conservancy, the TogetherGreen Program, SONY, and Southern California Edison.
Environmental Leadership
Using our School-Shed model, we cultivate intergenerational learning in K-16 schools, including:
Leo Politi & Esperanza Elementary
Audubon Middle and Dorsey High
West LA College
Field Trips
With the support of our volunteers, we offer STEM and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) based environmental education programs to local K-6 schools.
Our programs take place at the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.

Schoolyard Habitat
A collaborative effort between Los Angeles Audubon Society College Fellows, restoration ecologists, ELP students, and community volunteers implement schoolyard habitats at urban core schools near downtown Los Angeles.
Science & Art
Science and art are intertwined in conveying STEM concepts and then interpret them for an audience through visual media. See more at the Nature Nexus Institute.
