This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 16, 2024.

A SANDHILL CRANE continued in the Antelope Valley at the A&G Sod Farms (Avenue N and 50th Street East) through January 6.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey through January 14.  It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued at El Dorado Park in Long Beach through January 9.

A VEGA GULL continued along the Los Angeles River at 26th Street in Vernon through January 3.  The best viewing spot is north of 26th Street on the west side of the river.

Up to two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued along the Los Angeles River between Atlantic and Slauson through January 15.

A PACIFIC LOON continued at Quail Lake near Gorman through January 12.

A SWAINSON’S HAWK was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on January 5.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was in Claremont on December 31.  Two more were above Glendora on January 11.

A SHORT-EARED OWL continued in the Antelope Valley at West Ave. B and 60th Street West on January 1.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through January 15, often around the disc golf course in the southwest area of the park.

Other YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS continued at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester and at the UCLA campus, both through January 5.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel continued through January 15.  It has been at the southeast end of the park.

Another DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was near the southeast end of Lake Balboa in Van Nuys (in sycamores along the outflow channel) on January 2.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was southeast of the fishing lake at Hansen Dam on January 9.

Up to two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River in the vicinity of Willow Street in Long Beach through January 14.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD was at the San Gabriel Coastal Bason Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 5, west of the end of Mines Ave.

The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD in Griffith Park continued through January 12 in this area 34.1408, -118.2888 (Google Maps). 

A LEAST FLYCATCHER was by the Plaza Manor Shopping Mall in Torrance from December 28-January 14.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was at Lancaster City Park through January 13 and one continued at Lake Lindero (near the spillway) through January 5.  Another was on Santa Catalina Island on January 2 at Little Harbor.

A BELL’S VIREO was at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area in Van Nuys (midway along the west side of the lake) from December 31-January 1.

Another BELL’S VIREO continued at Rio de Los Angeles Park through January 11.

Up to two LAPLAND LONGSPURS and two THICK-BILLED LONGSPURS were at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N through January 12.  This is private property; be sure to bird from the roadside only.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 2.

SAGEBRUSH SPARROWS were in the Antelope Valley at West Ave. B and 60th Street West from January 31-January 6, at Saddleback Butte State Park through January 1, continuing at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (two birds) through January 4.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in the Sailboat Cove area of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 14.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 12.

Another GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at Sycamore Canyon in Whittier from January 11-12.

A LUCY’S WARBLER continued on the north side of Heartwell Park in Long Beach (south of Carson, east of Bellflower) through January 8.  A TENNESSEE WARBLER was in this area on January 5.

Up to two LUCY’S WARBLERS were at the Del Amo Shopping Center in Torrance from January 4-14.

The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through January 12 in this area 33.9687, -118.4168.

A PINE WARBLER was at Windermere Park in La Mirada through January 4 along the park’s north border.

A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER (returning from last winter) was at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel from January 11-15. 

The PAINTED REDSTART at San Dimas Canyon Park continued by the restrooms near the entrance through January 9.

 

Another PAINTED REDSTART continued in Brentwood through January 2.
