This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 19, 2024.

A SANDHILL CRANE was in the Antelope Valley at the A&G Sod Farms (Avenue N and 50th Street East) from December 14-18.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey through December 16.  It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.

Up to nine MOUNTAIN PLOVERS continued at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N through December 14.  This is private property, bird from the roadside only.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued along the west side of the lake at Hansen Dam through December 15.

Another SOLITARY SANDPIPER was in the Rio Hondo flood basin from December 14-15 and one was at a pond in El Dorado Park in Long Beach south of Willow Street from December 16-17 

A VEGA GULL continued along the Los Angeles River at 26th Street in Vernon through December 18.  Easiest viewing is north of 26th Street on the west side of the river.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included one at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on December 8, one at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through December 8, up to three along the Los Angeles River between Atlantic and Slauson through December 16, one along the Rio Hondo between Rush Street and Rosemead Blvd on December 14 and one at Zuma Beach on December 15.

A PACIFIC LOON was at Quail Lake on December 7.

A FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATER was at Cortes Bank southwest of San Clemente Island on December 7.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was observed over Kiwanis Park on Grand Ave. in Monrovia from December 14-16.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at St. Andrews Priory near Valyermo through December 12 near the parking lot and orchard.

Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through December 14 and one was at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach on December 16.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel continued through December 18.  It has been at the east end of the park.

One to two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street in Long Beach through December 17.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD was by the Whittier Narrows Dam along the Rio Hondo on December 14.

The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD in Griffith Park continued through December 18 in this area 34.1408 -118.2888.  Nearby was a returning wintering HEPATIC TANAGER on December 15.

HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS were at Tournament Park in Pasadena on December 12 and along San Jose Creek in Whittier on December 14.

A DUSKY-FLYCATCHER was at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on December 7 in the east side riparian.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at the Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel on December 7.

EASTERN PHOEBES included one on Santa Catalina Island on December 8, one at Lancaster City Park on December 14 and another continuing at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through December 15.

A BELL’S VIREO was at Rio de Los Angeles Park from December 9-16.

A VERDIN was near the William S. Hart Baseball Park in Santa Clarita on December 8.

Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS, a CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR and up to three THICK-BILLED LONGSPURS were at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N through December 13.  This is private property, be sure to bird from the roadside only.

The DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas continued at Sailboat Cove through December 10.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on December 10 and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was there from December 11-12.

A BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW was along Devil’s Canyon Trail in Chatsworth on December 14.

A SAGEBRUSH SPARROW continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 17 and another was reported at Saddleback Butte State Park through December 16.

A SWAMP SPARROW continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 18 at the small dry pond near the old (closed) north shore pier.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through December 14
Two BALTIMORE ORIOLES were at El Nido Park in Torrance from December 10-12.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was at Heartwell Park in Long Beach on December 14 in a Tipu tree along Carson Street between Bellflower and Woodruff.

A PALM WARBLER was at the Drake Park greenbelt in Long Beach on December 12.

A PINE WARBLER was at Windermere Park in La Mirada from December 16-19 along the park’s north border.

The PAINTED REDSTART at San Dimas Canyon Park continued by the restrooms near the entrance through December 17.

An INDIGO BUNTING continued at Ballona Discovery Park in Playa del Rey through December 11.
