A EURASIAN WIGEON was along the LA River in Long Beach (below the Rosecrans crossing) on January 19.
A "EURASIAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL continued through January 23 at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera. Enter the basins from the east end of Mines Avenue, east of Passons Blvd.
Another "EURASIAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL continued through January 18 at the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk.
The RED-NECKED GREBE on Lake Palmdale was seen through January 17. There is no public access, but the lake can be viewed from Barrel Springs Road (just north of Lago Lindo Road).
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continued along the LA River in Long Beach through January 24. It is being seen in the area south of Hill Street (which is below the Willow Street crossing).
Six VAUX’S SWIFTS were along the LA River at Fletcher Drive on January 21 and one was at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale on January 23.
The continuing AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro through January 24.
Another AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was at the Ballona Creek mouth on January 21 and one continued at Topanga State Beach through January 20.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek was seen through January 21. It is often by the UCLA boat ramp north of Pacific Avenue, but does move up and down the channel a fair distance. It was also seen once this past week at the Ballona Salt Pan.
Two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS (an adult and an immature) were at the Rio Hondo spreading basins on January 20 with one reported there through January 22. Access and viewing can be had off the end of Canford Street (south of Washington and west of Paramount).
The NEOTROPIC CORMORANT at Echo Park in Los Angeles was reported through January 22.
The ZONE-TAILED HAWK in Monrovia was reported through January 21. It is in the area around Grand Park and is often seen flying in the vicinity. A SWAINSON’S HAWK was seen in the area on January 19.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through January 19. It has been at the Rosamond Dry Lake area (no access), but can be viewed from outside that area. A letter of permission is required for entry.
A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Sylmar on January 20.
The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in the Sepulveda Basin was seen through January 24. It has been in the trees around the amphitheater and along Haskell Creek just north of the wildlife area's north entrance. Also check the large pines south of the restrooms.
Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was around the restrooms at O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills on January 23.
A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER was at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (below the Altadena Drive entrance) on January 23.
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD at Entradero Park in Torrance was seen through January 22 around the pond.
Other TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through January 20 and at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through January 23.
The SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER continued along the LA River south of Willow Street in Long Beach through January 24. Check the east side of the river (both the neighborhood and the bare trees in the river channel) below Hill Street, just north of PCH. There is access (a staircase) at the west end of Hill Street.
An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Apollo Park near Lancaster through January 19. It has been near the north shore, south of the playground area and around the islands.
A CASSIN’S VIREO (January 22) and a SWAMP SPARROW (January 22-23) were by the northeast corner of Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City this past week.
The RED-FLANKED BLUETAIL at Clark Library in the West Adams district of Los Angles was still present as of January 24. The library grounds are open to the public from 9-5 on weekdays only. The area near the southeast U-shaped hedge may be the most reliable area for this bird, but it moves around the grounds.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at the southwest side of Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 20. A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was here through January 18 and an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was reported through January 19. Official hours of the preserve are 10-5 Tuesday through Sunday.
The DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (usually around the sports field on the west side of the basin) through January 23.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued at Ralph Dills Park in Paramount through January 20. It was last seen south of San Juan Street. Another continued at a residence in Torrance through January 24 and one was on Arden Road in Pasadena on January 23.
The HARRIS’S SPARROW continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena around the sports field through January 22.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued at Jesse Owens Park in Los Angeles through January 18. Check the area by the ball fields and playground.
The adult male AMERICAN REDSTART continued at Hemingway Park in Carson through January 19. It has been reported in the trees that are in line with the nursery inside the power line right of way.
PALM WARBLERS continued in Long Beach at 1765 Magnolia Ave. (at the greenbelt south of PCH and Magnolia) through January 24 and at 1721 West 21st Street (Admiral Kidd Park) through January 20.
The PAINTED REDSTART at Brookside Park in Pasadena was present through January 24. It is being seen behind the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center between the playground area and Arroyo Terrace and favors the large dead pine tree.
A SUMMER TANAGER continued at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles (at the west edge of the central lawn area) through January 19. This is private property, but birders are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents.
Another SUMMER TANAGER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through January 23. It was last reported southeast of restroom 5.
