This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for February 2, 2023.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK continued off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo through February 1.
At least one of two WHITE-WINGED DOVES continued just west of Encanto Parkway in Duarte through January 29 near the intersection of Sagehurst Drive and Conata Street.
An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was at the Ballona Creek mouth on January 28.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through February 1. It has been on the salt pan and along the creek channel, most recently between Lincoln and the 90 Freeway.
Three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at the Rio Hondo Spreading Basins in Pico Rivera on January 31. The entrance is on the west side of the intersection of Mines and Paramount.
Up to four NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at the Sepulveda Basin (on the wildlife lake) through February 1, at Legg Lake in South El Monte also through February 1 and at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 27. Six more were at Burton Chace County Park in Marina del Rey on February 1.
A CALIFORNIA CONDOR was along Interstate 5 by Castaic Lake on January 30. Three were along the I-5 south of Pyramid Lake on February 1.
A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was in Monrovia through January 30.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through January 29 (last at the frisbee golf course by the closed restroom).
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER along the Los Angeles River near Lake Balboa continued through February 1. It has been at the south end of the riparian strip bordering the west side of the golf course. Google Earth 34.1775, -118.4925.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued at the Sepulveda Basin through January 29.
At least one TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued both above and below the Willow Street crossing along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through January 29 and another was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera on January 31 near the south basin. A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at the latter location (picnic area at the extreme north end) through January 31.
A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued by the small north shore pond and closed pier at Bonelli Regional Park through February 2. Also in this area were up to four continuing SWAMP SPARROWS and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER all seen through February 2.
Another HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was north of Monte Verde Park in Lakewood on January 29.
PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were at Wardlow Park in Long Beach on January 28, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 30 and at William Andrew’s Clark Memorial Library through February 1.
A CASSIN’S VIREO was on the east side of the wildlife lake at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve on February 1.
A PACIFIC WREN was near Switzer’s Picnic Area (below the campground) on January 28.
A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through February 1.
A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 31 along the south side fence of the Tom Sawyer Camp.
A HARRIS’S SPARROW was at a residence in Beverly Hills through from January 29-February 1.
HOODED ORIOLES were at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area on January 28, continuing at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (north end of the desert garden) through February 29 and at Arcadia County Park on January 30.
The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through January 30 in the area outside the Art Gallery. Google Earth 33.9687, -118.4167. Parking is free on weekends.
The PAINTED REDSTART south of Birdcage Park in Long Beach at 3946 Hackett Ave. was reported through February 1. A TENNESSEE WARBLER was present here from also through February 1.
SUMMER TANAGERS were at Cesar Chavez Park in Long Beach through January 28, at the Whittier Narrows Nature Center in South El Monte on January 28 and at Bonelli Regional Park through February 1 usually near the large square (east) north shore parking lot.
