This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 1, 2023.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Ballona Creek mouth continued through November 26.  This bird has been along the creek above the Pacific Ave. bridge and on the nearby Salt Pan.

Twelve MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were in the west Antelope Valley at 120th Street West and Avenue B on November 29.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings on December 1.

A WESTERN CATTLE EGRET continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through November 29.

ZONE-TAILED HAWKS continued in north Glendora through November 26 and in Sierra Madre (up to two birds) through November 30.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was on Santa Catalina Island (Rancho Escondido) on November 25. 

Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at the Monte Cristo Fire Station in the San Gabriel Mountains on November 29 and one was at the LA County Museum of History Nature Garden on November 29.

A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER was at Satellite Park in Cerritos from November 28-30.

A pale “PRAIRIE” MERLIN was in the Antelope Valley on December 1 at 50th Street East and Avenue L.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the lower Los Angeles River at Willow Street in Long Beach through December 1 and at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera (up to two birds) through November 29.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through November 30.  Google Earth coordinates are 34.1400, -118.2884, but this bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER was in Griffith Park from November 20-30 in the same area.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds through December 1 along Ave. C.

A YELLOW-GREEN VIREO continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through November 29 in the area just southwest of Monte Verde Park.  A BROWN THRASHER also continued here through November 24.  Google Maps 33.8395, -118.0960

A PACIFIC WREN continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through November 26.  Google Earth coordinates to the general area are 34.1888, -118.1775 

A WHITE WAGTAIL was along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach (by the Willow Street crossing) on December 1.

A “RED” FOX SPARROW was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through November 25 along Ave. C.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO was in Signal Hill (North Side Trails, Hilltop Park) on November 25.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamonga Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 1 by the west side athletic field.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in Rolling Hills, at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood, and at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas this past week.

SWAMP SPARROWS included up to four at the Piute Ponds through December 1 along Ave. C and one at Little Harbor on Catalina Island on November 25.

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were in the east Antelope Valley through December 1, south of Monte Verde Park (along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail) in Lakewood through December 1 and at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through November 26.

HOODED ORIOLES were in Rolling Hills on November 24 and at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia on November 25.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued along the southwest side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 1.  Another was at the southeast corner of the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale (east of Riverside Drive) from November 26-28 and one was near Monte Verde Park in Lakewood from November 28-29.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through November 26.  Google Earth coordinates 34.1891, -118.1774

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 1.  It has been at the south end of Avila Park below the Willow Street crossing.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued at Cheviot Hills Park (by the picnic tables at the top of the hill behind the pool) through November 25.

SUMMER TANAGERS continued at the north shore of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through November 29, in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park through November 26 and at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through November 26.
