This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 3.
Two TRUMPETER SWANS (an adult and immature) continued at the Rio Hondo Spreading Basins in Pico Rivera through January 2. Parking can be found along Mines Ave. just east of Paramount. Then walk west and cross Paramount to the entrance. Alternatively, there is an entrance on Washington Blvd. The swans have been moving around the area, and were last seen in the basins just above Washington. Note that parts of the basins are off limits to the public, be sure to obey signs and locked gates.
The RED-NECKED GREBE near the fishing pier at Cabrillo Beach was reported through December 30.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continued at a residence in Redondo Beach through December 30.
An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER continued at the Ballona Creek mouth through December 29.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along Ballona Creek was last seen on the salt pan (upstream from Pacific Ave.) on January 1.
The SOLITARY SANDPIPER at the South Coast Botanic Garden continued through January 2 at the pond.
First six and then nine SHORT-EARED OWLS were on San Clemente Island from January 1-2.
A NORTHERN "YELLOW=SHAFTED" FLICKER was at Sycamore Canyon in Whittier on December 28. It was along the stream near the trailhead.
A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates through January 1. It has mainly been seen mainly around the lake and on the small hill to the west. Be aware that an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER has also been reported in this area.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 30.
A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued around the pond at Entradero Park in Torrance through December 30.
Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through January 1. It was last seen north of the exercise area on the west side of the lake.
The GREATER PEWEE in Rustic Canyon (Pacific Palisades) continued through January 1. It was recently observed between 747 and 801 Latimer Road. Also check the area around Brooktree and Greentree. A SUMMER TANAGER continued in this area also through January 1.
A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden through January 1 on the west side of the lake.
Another PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER was at Wardlow Park in Long Beach on January 1.
The EASTERN PHOEBE continued at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale through January 2. It has been both in the river channel and adjacent park, just below the Riverside bridge. A "BLACK" MERLIN also continued at the park through December 30.
A CASSIN'S VIREO was at the South Coast Botanic Garden on December 30. It was by the junction of Memorial Meadow Lane and Lakeview road.
A CLIFF SWALLOW was along the LA River in the Sepulveda Basin (below Burbank Blvd.) on December 30.
A DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCO was in Juniper Hills on December 28 and a DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCO was there on December 29.
The adult male ORCHARD ORIOLE at Loyola Marymount University was reported through January 1. It has been in the coral tree on the north side of the campus near the visitor's parking lot.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at El Dorado Park (Nature Center area) on December 31. Another continued by the tennis courts at DeForest Park in Long Beach through January 1 as did one at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 2.
A NORTHERN PARULA continued at the northeast end of Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia through December 31.
A PALM WARBLER continued at the Sepulveda Basin (along the LA River just above the dam) through January 1.
The PAINTED REDSTART continued at Inglewood Park Cemetery through January 1. It has been near the center of the park, in an oak south of the pond.
A SUMMER TANAGER continued at Veteran's Memorial Park in Sylmar through December 29. It was reported southeast of restroom 5 and also around the yellow community center building with the blue roof.
A SUMMER TANAGER continued in the southwest corner of Wardlow Park in Long Beach through January 2.
