This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 11, 2024.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was in Llano on October 6.
Four LESSER NIGHTHAWKS were at Santa Fe Dam (seen in the early evening) on October 9.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through October 10. Check the area above the Pacific Ave. bridge. It is usually mixed in with the flock of Black-bellied Plovers. A RED KNOT was at the nearby Ballona Salt Pan on October 5.
SABINE’S GULLS were at Lake Palmdale on October 5 and along the Los Angeles River by the end of 26th Street in Vernon on October 10. A WESTERN CATTLE EGRET was at the latter location on October 10.
Up to three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic Blvd. and Florence Ave. crossings on October 10.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON continued at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through October 10.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was observed flying over Elysian Park on October 11.
TROPICAL KINGBIRDS included two along the Los Angeles River at Willow Street in Long Beach through October 8 and one at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach from October 5-10 (on the south side of the west arm of the lagoon).
A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on October 9 on the lawn east of the swim beach.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were on the golf course at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach from October 7-10 and at Malibu Lagoon on October 8.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood from October 6-8.
ORCHARD ORIOLES were in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 6 and in Redondo Beach on October 6.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was in Elysian Park here 34.0817, -118.2479 on October 11.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS included one continuing at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through October 8 and one the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood on October 8.
An AMERICAN REDSTART was in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 6.
A PALM WARBLER was in the Sepulveda Basin on October 5.
A PAINTED REDSTART was at a residence in West Los Angeles on October 3.
SUMMER TANAGERS were in Topanga on October 4, in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park from October 7-9 and in Elysian Park here 34.0817, -118.2479 on October 11.
Two PAINTED BUNTINGS were along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach below the Willow Street crossing from October 5-8. They were seen near the end of Hill Street.
