This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for September 17.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach at Willow Street through September 10.  

Another WHITE-WINGED DOVE was east of Lancaster on September 16.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through September 13.  It is often by the UCLA boat ramp upstream from the Pacific Ave bridge.

A SABINE'S GULL continued at Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission or pass required for entry) through September 15 and a COMMON TERN was there on September 14.

A NAZCA BOOBY was reported east of Santa Catalina Island on September 14.

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued at the lake at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Van Nuys through September 11.

YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh in Playa del Rey and at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro on September 12. Others were at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh in San Pedro and at Golden Shore Marine Reserve in Long Beach on September 13.


A PURPLE MARTIN was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on September 16.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH were on San Clemente Island on September 14. A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was on the island on September 16. There is no public access to the island.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Kin Gillette Ranch near Calabasas on September 13 and at Hansen Dam on September 16 in the weedy drainage channel west of the Recreation Center parking area.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at Heartwell Park in Long Beach on September 11 near Charlemagne Street and a TENNESSEE WARBLER was in the same area from September 10-12.

The LUCY'S WARBLER at Silver Lake Meadows continued through September 17 near the central part of the meadow area closer the west side. Other birds in this area were a BOBOLINK on September 13 and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER on September 16. A ZONE-TAILED HAWK flew over the area on September 13.

A VIRGINIA'S WARBLER continued at the Piute Ponds through September 16 along Avenue C near the dip. Another was in the upper part of Agua Amarga Park in Palos Verdes Estates from September 12-17. A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH continued through September 16 at the northeast corner of Big Piute Pond.

A NORTHERN PARULA was at Banning Park in Wilmington on September 12.

A CANADA WARBLER was in the north end willows at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on September 16.
