This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 27.
WHITE-WINGED DOVES were at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on August 22, along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach (2 birds) from August 22-24.
Other WHITE-WINGED DOVES were at Ports O Call Village in San Pedro on August 21 and at Malibu Lagoon on August 24..
A RED-NECKED STINT was at Malibu Lagoon from August 22-27. It has been observed from the beach side of the lagoon but moves around the area.
A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach just above the Willow Street crossing from August 22-23.
A BLACK TERN was at Malibu Lagoon on August 23.
A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued along the lower Los Angeles River around the island just below Willow Street through August 22.
Two more NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS continued on the lake at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Van Nuys through August 25.
Two REDDISH EGRETS were at Malibu Lagoon on August 21 and another was at Alamitos Bay on August 22.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh (Salinas de San Pedro) through August 20.
Three more were at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach through August 23 and two were at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh on August 24.
An INDIGO BUNTING continued along the San Gabirel River in South El Monte through August 21. It has been in the riverbed just above the Whittier Narrows Dam. Access to this area can be made from the south Legg Lake parking area (along Durfee Ave., no fee weekdays). From here walk south to the river and dam area, about a half mile.
