This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for February 20, 2024.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Helen Keller Park in Los Angeles on February 17.
A SANDHILL CRANE continued in the Antelope Valley at the A&G Sod Farms (Avenue N and 50th Street East) through February 16.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey through February 16. It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued south of Willow Street at El Dorado Park in Long Beach through February 19.
Another SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued by the spillway at Hansen Dan through February 17.
Up to three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings through February 19. Others were at Dockwelier State Beach in El Segundo from February 14-19 and along Lower Ballona Creek on February 16.
The PACIFIC LOON continued at Quail Lake through February 12.
ZONE-TAILED HAWKS were in San Dimas Canyon on February 11, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on February 15, and in Pasadena on February 17.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through February 17, often around the disc golf course in the southwest area of the park.
Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills from February 16-19 and one continued at Loyola Marymount University through February 19.
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel continued through February 20, often near the middle of the park.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued at Hansen Dam through February below the Recreational Lake.
Up to two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the Los Angeles River in the vicinity of Willow Street in Long Beach through February 18.
The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD in Griffith Park continued through February 15, generally in this area 34.1408, -118.2888 (Google Maps).
A LEAST FLYCATCHER was at Kenneth Hahn SRA from February 14-19. Google Maps 34.0058, -118.3641.
Up to two LAPLAND LONGSPURS and two THICK-BILLED LONGSPURS were at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N through February 15. This is private property; be sure to bird from the roadside only.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through February 17 as did a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER through February 19.
Up to a dozen SAGEBRUSH SPARROWS were in the east Antelope Valley by 250th Street East and Adobe Mountain from February 8-16. Another five were just north of this location on February 15.
A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in the Sailboat Cove area of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through February 19.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through February 18 as did a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER through February 16.
BALTIMORE ORIOLES were at Kenneth Hahn SRA in the Japanese Garden from February 15-19 and at Ladera Park from February 16-17.
A PINE WARBLER continued at Windermere Park in La Mirada through February 16 along the north border.
The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through February 19. Google Maps 33.9687, -118.4168.
A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER continued at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel through January 19.
The PAINTED REDSTART at San Dimas Canyon Park continued by the restrooms near the entrance through February 19.
A HEPATIC TANAGER was at La Mirada Community Park through February 17. Google Maps 33.9078,-118.0080.
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at the LA County Arboretum from February 15-16 in the herb garden.
