This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 4.
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were at King Harbor on September 27 and at Dockwelier State Beach in El Segundo on October 3. The latter bird was between the second and third parking lots.
A SABINE’S GULL continued at Lake Palmdale (no public access) through October 3. Another SABINE’S GULL was on the wildlife lake at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Preserve on October 3.
A COMMON TERN continued at Malibu Lagoon through September 29.
Three CATTLE EGRETS continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through October 1.
Up to three YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were along lower Ballona Creek and at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh through October 3.
A TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE was at Hopkin’s Wilderness Park on October 1. A SUMMER TANAGER was in the southeast corner of the park on October 3.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at a residence on the Palos Verdes Peninsula from September 30-October 3. Two more were on Santa Catalina Island on September 30.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at the Natural History Museum near downtown Los Angeles on September 27 in the west part of the Rose Garden. Another was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on September 26.
Two more CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach on September 28. One was at Pt. Vicente on September 29 north of the Interpretive Center building.
A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW were at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on October 2. They were in the weedy patch at the northeast end of the upper lake.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was on San Clemente Island on September 30.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Banning Park in Wilmington through September 29. On September 28, a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was found in the northwest corner (in eucalyptus behind two large ficus trees).
Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Maywood Riverfront Park in Maywood on September 30 in the southeast part of the park.
A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was at a residence in Claremont from September 28-29.
At Creek Park in La Mirada a TENNESSEE WARBLER continued through September 28, below the churches on Cordova.
Two BLACKPOLL WARBLERS and an AMERICAN REDSTART were around the tennis courts at DeForest Park in Long Beach on September 27, with the redstart continuing the following day. Just south of here, at the DeForest Wetlands Park, a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued near the north entrance through September 27.
Other BLACKPOLL WARBLERS were at Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights on September 28 in trees on the east side of the lake by the bridge, at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on September 29 southeast of the lower parking lot and continuing at the small park along the LA River just below the Los Feliz Golf Course through October 3.
A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates on September 28. Another was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) from September 30-October 1. Yet another CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was in the Rose Garden at the LA Natural History Museum from October 1-2 in the first rose bed north of the northeastern gazebo.
A PRAIRIE WARBLER was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance from September 27-October 3. It was in willows along the east-west central pathway (from the sheds near the center of the marsh, take the dirt path west through the willows. Look for the bird in the willows around the reedy/grassy area. If you get to the small wooden bridge you’ve gone too far). A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued in this area through October 1.
A CANADA WARBLER was on San Clemente Island on September 27.
A SUMMER TANAGER was at Switzer’s Camp in the San Gabriel Mountains on September 28.
