Early were two HOODED MERGANSERS along the LA River adjacent to the Los Feliz Golf Course on August 23. Farther upstream by the 134 Freeway crossing, a very early MERLIN was found on August 27.
The WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh near Playa del Rey through August 29.
A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was along lower Ballona Creek west of the UCLA boat ramp on August 30.
Two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were along the lower LA River on August 25. One was above the Willow Street pipe bridge and the other north of the Wardlow crossing.
A COMMON TERN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on August 24.
A presumed MASKED BOOBY was seen between Catalina Island and San Pedro on August 25.
Two NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS continued at the spreading ponds just below Hansen Dam through August 24. They have been in the pond on the south side of Glenoaks closest to Branford St.
At Madrona Marsh in Torrance, a LITTLE BLUE HERON was confirmed on August 30, but apparently present since at least August 20. Also at the marsh was a MAGNOLIA WARBLER from August 28-30. It was seen foraging in willows along the central road.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued to be reported at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh through August 30. They are usually along the Lincoln Blvd. arm of the marsh, but move around the area.
A BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was on San Clemente Island on August 24.
