This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 8, 2023.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Ballona Creek mouth continued through December 2.  This bird has been along the creek above the Pacific Ave. bridge and on the nearby Salt Pan.  Two RED KNOTS were at the Ballona Creek mouth also on December 2.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Lake Hollywood from December 4-6.

Four YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon through December 4.

A FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATER and a BROWN BOOBY were offshore in Santa Monica Bay on December 7.

At least one ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued Monrovia through December 7.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was in the Antelope Valley near Avenue B and 60th Street West on December 2.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was in Area 2 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach from December 4-5.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera (up to two birds) through December 7 and in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through December 3.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through December 5.  Google Earth coordinates are 34.1400, -118.2884, but this bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER was in Griffith Park in the same general area through December 2.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 5 along Ave. C.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach from December 4-7 north of the day care center.

CASSIN’S VIREOS were at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 5, at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 7 and at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through December 2.

A PACIFIC WREN was in the San Gabriel mountains at Buckhorn Campground near the Burkhart Trailhead on December 2.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was in Griffith Park on December 3.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamonga Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 3 by the west side athletic field.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in the Sailboat Cove area at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 4.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in Topanga State Park, at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood and in Griffith Park this past week.

SWAMP SPARROWS included up to four at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 5, two at St. Andrew’s Abbey near Valyermo on December 4 and one in Tujunga Wash on December 3.

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were south of Monte Verde Park (along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail) in Lakewood through December 3 and at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 2.

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds from December 6-8.  It has been east of the end of Mines Ave. and also in the riverbed.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS continued along the southwest side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 5 and near Monte Verde Park in Lakewood through December 6.  One to two were at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 7.

NASHVILLE WARBLERS were at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on December 3 and at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on December 3.

An AMERICAN REDSTART was at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora from December 3-5 near the center of the park.

A PALM WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 6.  It has been at the south end of Avila Park below the Willow Street crossing.  Another PALM WARBLER was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on December 7.

A PINE WARBLER was at Wardlow Park in Long Beach from December 3-7 on the east side north of the Community Center.

A PAINTED REDSTART was in Arcadia on December 5.

SUMMER TANAGERS were at the Whittier Narrow Nature Center area in South El Monte on December 1, continuing in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park through December 5, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (north shore near the old wooden pier) through December 3 and continuing at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through December 4.
