This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 6, 2024.

A TUNDRA SWAN was at Pyramid Lake on November 29 and three were at Castaic Lake on December 2. 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was by the Venice Pier from November 29-December 5 and another was at Castaic Lagoon on December 2.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey through November 28.  It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.

Up to fourteen MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N from December 3-5.  Bird from the roadside only.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on November 29.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through November 30.  Others were at Zuma Beach on December 1 and along the Los Angeles River in the Vernon / Maywood area through December 5.

A SWAINSON’S HAWK was along the Los Angeles River above the 110 Freeway on December 4.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at the Rolling Hills Landfill Loop on November 29 and another was at St. Andrews Priory near Valyermo from November 29-December 5 near the parking lot and orchard.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel continued through November 30.  It has been at the east end of the park.

At least one TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued along the Los Angeles River at the Willow Street crossing in Long Beach through December 3 and a CASSIN’S VIREO was at this location on December 3.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through December 4 near Mines Ave.

The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD in Griffith Park was seen through December 4 along the Mineral Wells Trail.  Google Maps coordinates 34.1407, -118.2885.

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at El Dorado Park in Long Beach (south of Willow Street) on December 2.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia on November 30 and another was at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles on December 1.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR, two CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS and three THICK-BILLED LONGSPURS were at the A&G Sod Fields in the Antelope Valley at 50th Street East and Ave. N between December 3-5.  This is private property, be sure to bird from the roadside only.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO was at Victoria Park in Carson on November 29.

The DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas continued at Sailboat Cove through December 2.

A SAGEBRUSH SPARROW continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through December 2.

A NELSON’S SPARROW was at Malibu Lagoon from November 29-December 5.  It works along the water’s edge at various places around the lagoon.

A SWAMP SPARROW continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 4 at the small dry pond near the old (closed) north shore pier.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through November 28.

Another GREEN-TAILED TOHWEE was in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on November 30.

An ORCHARD ORIOLE continued at Tolita School in Torrance through November 29.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Torrance on November 29.  Another continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 3.  Also at Madrona was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on December 5.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on December 1 in Tipu trees near the parking lot entrance.

The PAINTED REDSTART at San Dimas Canyon Park was seen by the restrooms near the entrance through December 2.

An adult male SUMMER TANAGER continued in the Old Zoo area of Griffith Park through November 30.

Another SUMMER TANAGER was at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles on December 4 and one was in Palos Verdes Estates on December 1.
